Excellent thread on the current political snafu.

I think my political views align very closely to Jane’s. The glaring red warning light for me at the moment is the orgiastic resurgence of blatant misogyny. Objectively left/liberal democracy is my choice of system. I don’t know if men collectively are capable of maintaining

a level of respect for women’s rights that makes that sustainable.

I’m 58 and I’ve been an explicit feminist since I was 12, in 1974. I think I count as a second waver. After the current exhibition, I’m not sure women can continue to co-exist with men.

I don’t care about NAMALT. I care about how the 30 or 40 % of men who think it’s cool to dominate us with violence and misogyny can destroy any system which attempts to protect our rights.

So we’re left with depending on the violence either of individual men or of men employed by the state to keep us safe. Fuck that. We know how well that’s gone for us in the past.

Men are at liberty to prove me wrong, of course, but as far as I’m concerned they’re out of time. They haven’t even managed Dworkin’s 24-hour rape truce yet, and she asked for that 40 years ago.

I don’t believe in any of the religious or civil systems invented by men which place an exceptional value on their lives and make it our duty to reproduce them. Women as natural kind have full reproductive authority, and no obligation to tolerate male violence and domination.

This makes me the intellectual heir of Sally Miller Gearhart, who said we would have to change the sex ratio if we wanted the species to survive. Right now, I can’t think of a harsher or more vital truth in the face of covid, climate change, resource depletion.

Democratic matriarchy, with strict control over the sex ratio and the population, is about the only way I think we can get through the planetary crises confronting us.

So politically, I’m not really sure what that makes me. An extreme revolutionary, I expect.
